Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns temperatures will plummet to -4C this week - but a big change is on the way

Temperatures are set to plummet as low as -4C at times this week - but Met Eireann revealed that there is a big change is on the way.

The coldest night of the week is expected to be Tuesday, where a "sharp to severe frost" is expected.

It will also be well below freezing on both Monday and Wednesday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Frost and ice will clear slowly this morning. It'll be a cold day with a moderate to fresh westerly wind bringing sunshine and showers.

"The showers will be most frequent in the west at first, becoming more widespread in the afternoon, and will turn wintry at times with a risk of hail and thunder. Afternoon temperatures just 4 to 6 degrees.

"This evening in the north showers will merge to give longer spells of rain and it will be windy there as westerly winds continue to reach gale force at the coasts of Donegal.

"Elsewhere winds will gradually ease and showers will mostly die out. Temperatures will fall to between minus 1 and plus 2 degrees with frost and ice forming once again.

"Tomorrow, Tuesday, with see any frost and ice clear slowly and temperatures rise to 5 to 7 degrees from north to south. There'll be isolated showers in the morning, becoming more frequent in the afternoon.

"The outlook for Tuesday night is for a dry and clear night with a sharp to severe frost. Winds will fall light southwesterly or variable and temperatures are expected to reach as low as minus 4 degrees inland.

"Wednesday will be mostly dry, with a risk of isolated showers, and at times turning cloudier in the south with a risk of patchy rain there later. Winds will be light southwest or variable and temperatures in the north will be 5 or 6 degrees at best, up to 7 or 8 degrees in the south. It'll be another cold night on Wednesday night with temperatures once again well below freezing overnight."

And while conditions will stay cold on Thursday and Friday, a big change is on the way this weekend, with a rise in temperatures expected as a warm front moves in.

A forecaster added: "Thursday will start dry with just a few showers. Highest temperatures during the day of 6 to 8 degrees.

"During the afternoon a freshening southerly wind will bring increasing cloud from the west, signalling a rain bearing weather front which will carry rain from the west to east during Thursday evening clearing in the early night.

"It'll be a cold night then with temperatures down to near freezing with icy stretches likely.

"Showers will follow with the clearance of the rain, turning wintry at times.

"Friday will see a return of more wintry showers from the west on a moderate, increasing fresh west to northwest wind.

"The current indications suggest a southerly wind will bring a warm front through, bringing outbreaks of rain for a time Friday night but also a rise in temperatures for the weekend."
