Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of 'raw' day with hail, thunder and -3C temperatures

Ireland is in for a "raw" Thursday with hail, thunder and subzero temperatures on the way.

Met Eireann is forecasting and a cold and breezy day with heavy rainfall, especially in the east of the country.

There is the possibility of sleet showers and snowfall on some hills. Highest temperatures during the day will range between 5C and 9C.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "A cold and breezy day. Scattered outbreaks of rain, turning heavy and persistent at times, especially across the eastern half of the country.

"Risk of hail and thunder, with some sleet and possible hill-snow. Some sunshine in parts too though.

"Feeling raw once again, with highs of only 5 to 9 degrees Celsius, in moderate to fresh and gusty northeasterly winds. Whilst the winds will ease later, misty conditions will set-in."

There will be an ongoing risk of hail and thunder on Thursday night.

And temperatures are set to plunge to as low as -3C, with Munster being the coldest province.

A spokesperson added: "Scattered falls of rain overnight with the ongoing risk of local hail and thunder.

"Long dry spells occurring too, but rather misty, with a sharp frost where skies stay clear.

"Cold, with lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees Celsius, coldest across Munster.

"Breezy up along the east coast, but calm generally elsewhere. Heavy rain will move into eastern counties towards morning."
