Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of wintry flurries as well as risk of hail and thunder showers

Parts of Ireland will be hit by wintry showers on Thursday while there's also a risk of hail and thunder.

Met Eireann has warned that sleet showers are expected for areas in the north and west, with snow falling on high ground.

It will be nippy on Thursday afternoon with highs of just 8C, and windy too, as gales are forecast for western and northern coasts.

A forecaster said: "The last of the overnight rain will clear into the Irish Sea this morning.

"A blustery day ahead, with sunny spells and scattered heavy showers.

The weather is expected to turn bad at the beginning of next week (PA)

"The showers will be wintry at times, especially across the north and west with snow over high ground.

"There will also be a risk of hail and thunder. Showers becoming confined to the north and west by evening.

"Highs of 5C to 8C, but feeling cooler in brisk westerly winds, with gales on west and north coasts."

Overnight will be dry for the most part as temperatures drop to between 2C and 5C.

It will get warmer as clouds thicken, which will cause heavy rain over high ground in the northwest.

The forecaster added: "Scattered showers in the west and north and largely dry elsewhere early tonight, with clear spells allowing temperatures to fall to between 2 and 5 degrees.

"However temperatures will rise overnight as cloud increases and rain arrives in the northwest and slowly spreads southeastwards, covering the northern half of the country by dawn.

"The rain will be heavy over high ground in the northwest with some local flooding and northwestern coasts."
