Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of 'widespread frost' over chilly bank holiday weekend

Ireland could be in for chilly nights over the bank holiday weekend.

Met Eireann said the current forecast is "uncertain" but that it's shaping up to be very cold at night with "widespread frost".

However, the weather chiefs believe it will be sunny and calm during the last long weekend before Christmas.

A forecaster said: "An uncertain outlook at this stage.

"At the moment however, indications point towards cool bright and calm weather, but very cold after dark with widespread frost."

It will be a wet and windy build up to the weekend, as blustery conditions and heavy showers are expected on Thursday.

The south of Ireland is to be the driest area, with highs ranging from 10C to 13C.

And a bitterly cold Thursday night is in store as temperatures look set to plunge to as low as -1C.

A Met Eireann spokeswoman said: "Very blustery with sunshine and scattered heavy showers - driest across the southern half of Ireland.

"Highest temperatures will again range 10C to 13C. Generally dry and calm after dark, but turning cold with lows of -1C to 3C."

The national forecaster has warned of a risk of flooding after some persistent heavy showers on Friday.

The spokeswoman added: "A cold and calm start with outbreaks of rain on Friday.

"Cold and wet for much of the day with some heavy persistent falls and the likelihood of spot flooding - the heaviest of the rain is likely across the south and east.

"It may hold dry further to the north and west. Becoming breezy at times, mainly near coasts."
