Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of wet and windy day with risk of thunder

All parts of the country are to be hit with rain on what will be a "wet and windy" Monday.

Met Eireann has also warned of a risk of thunder for some areas.

Monday morning may start off bright in most places, but rain from the south will spread across the country later. Highs will range from 16C to 19C.

A forecaster said: "Many areas dry and bright at first this morning, but all parts will become wet and windy for a time today as rain in the southwest gradually extends northeastwards over the country.

"Brighter intervals and showers will follow from the southwest later, but some of those showers will be heavy, with a risk of thunder.

"Top temperatures 16 to 19 degrees. Fresh to strong and gusty southeast winds will veer southerly and moderate with the clearance."

The threat of thundery and heavy showers will continue into Monday night.

The national forecaster is expecting long spells of rain overnight, while lowest temperatures will range from 10C to 13C.

The forecaster added: "Further showers or longer spells of rain tonight, with an ongoing threat of heavy and thundery bursts, but some drier, clearer intervals will occur also.

"Lows of 10 to 13 degrees, in light or moderate southerly breezes. Patches of mist and fog will form towards dawn."
