Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of weekend cold snap as temperatures plummet to -3C

A bitterly cold weekend is in store as temperatures are set to dip as low as -3C.

The worst of the sub-zero conditions are expected on Sunday night, with a chance of both fog and frost.

Drivers are also being warned to stay safe on the roads on Saturday night, with icy stretches possible on untreated surfaces.

The cold snap will begin on Friday night with values as low as -3C in the north of the country, although most of the south will stay relatively mild.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Today will become sunny and dry for the bulk of the country. It'll stay cloudy through Munster and at times along the east coasts with rain and drizzle there.

"Temperatures will range between 4 and 7 degrees, coldest in the north and a little higher in Munster. Winds will be light mainly from an easterly direction.

"Tonight will be cold and clear with temperatures around or just below freezing and as low as minus 3 degrees across Ulster.

"Skies will be largely clear across the northern half of the country with cloudier conditions in the south keeping temperatures there from falling below 4 or 5 degrees.

"It'll be breezier in Munster with a fresh easterly wind, winds will be mainly moderate elsewhere. Fog will form and will thicken towards dawn."

And as we move into the weekend it will remain largely dry and sunny during the day, but again temperatures will dip well below freezing at night.

A forecaster added: "Tomorrow, Saturday, across Munster and south Leinster it will be cloudy with a risk of rain on the coast in the morning, elsewhere will become mainly dry and sunny.

"Temperatures will range between 4 and 7 degrees again, a little higher near coasts. Winds will be light to moderate easterly, fresh on southern coasts, and will back northeasterly later.

"The outlook for Saturday night is for mainly dry conditions with long clear spells. There is a risk of passing showers on coasts, particularly in the north.
