Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of thundery downpours as rain to only clear up by Sunday

Met Eireann has warned of thundery downpours today as the weather turns rainy for the week.

We can only expect the rain to clear up by Sunday as the forecast is for showers every day this week, sometimes turning more intense.

However, there will be scattered patches of sunny weather, especially on Thursday.

Firstly, rain showers will develop today with occasional heavy thundery downpours, the meteorological service warned.

Met Eireann said this will mainly take place over the northern half of the country, with temperature highs of 17 to 21 degrees in westerly breezes.

Tonight, the showers will become isolated and overnight there will be long, clear periods.

Temperatures are only expected to drop as low as 11 to 13 degrees, with some fog patches as the breeze dies off.

Happily, Wednesday is set to see less shower activity overall - but any that do develop will be intense.

Good spells of sunny weather are set to occur during the morning and early afternoon.

Temperatures can hit highs of 18 to 21 degrees in westerly breezes.

And on Thursday we can expect a less showery day with long periods of sunny weather in easterly breezes and highs of 19 to 22 degrees.

Later on though, heavy rain will spread from Munster to all parts of the country overnight into Friday.

Strong easterly winds for a time, too.

Met Eireann's forecast for Friday shows a fairly wet day in store at times.

It will be close and humid too, with highs of 17 to 22 degrees.

Saturday will be very showery too but cooler also, with highs of 17 to 20 degrees in gusty northwesterly winds.

And Sunday will be less showery with longer drier and sunnier periods.

Highs of 17 to 21 degrees in light westerly breezes.
