Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of thunder and flooding as heavy showers batter Ireland

Parts of Ireland will experience thunder and flooding over the next two days.

Met Eireann has warned of a risk of spot flooding as heavy showers hit the northwest on Friday morning.

However, it will brighten up on Friday afternoon, despite scattered showers, with better conditions spreading from the west. Highs will range from 13C to 16C.

A forecaster said: "Heavy showers or longer spells of rain in most areas this morning with a risk of thunder and spot flooding.

"Brighter weather will spread from the west later this morning. Sunny spells and scattered showers for the rest of the day.

"Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with moderate to fresh, gusty southwest to west winds."

After a clear start, heavy showers will become widespread overnight, with the north being the worst affected area.

The forecast added: "Clear spells early tonight. Heavy or prolonged showers will spread eastwards across the country overnight.

"They'll be heaviest in the north. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees."

Heavy rain will batter most parts of the country on Saturday, with areas in the south and east expected to experience flooding.

A Met Eireann forecaster explained: "Sunny spells and scattered showers on Saturday morning.

"In the afternoon, persistent or heavy rain will develop in the south and will spread over Munster and Leinster in the evening.

"Highest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees with moderate southwest winds, becoming light and variable later."

The heavy rain will continue into the night, however, the national forecaster is unsure whether it will extend to Connacht and Ulster.

"Saturday night will be wet as persistent or heavy rain over Munster and Leinster continue with risk of spot flooding.

"It is not certain yet if this rain will extend over Ulster and Connacht, but there is good possibility that it will.

"The rain will eventually clear eastwards overnight with clear spells following. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees."
