Irish weather forecast: Status Yellow 'severe ice' warning issued for 22 counties with temperatures to plummet to minus four

A freezing end to the weekend is in store for much of Ireland, with temperatures set to plummet zero.

A Status Yellow  warning is in place for 22 counties with 'severe frost', icy patches and subzero temperatures forecast.

Sunday is expected to get off to a mostly dry and chilly start across the country, with day-time temperatures hovering between 5-8C.

But Met Eireann is warning of 'severe' frost tonight with temperatures set to hit as low as minus 4 degrees.

The warning covers all of Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois,Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and is valid from 8pm on Sunday until 9am on Monday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Dry and very cold tonight with clear skies and light winds. Widespread sharp to severe frost with minimum temperatures of zero to minus 4 degrees generally, though less cold near east coasts.

"A risk of icy patches locally and a few shallow fog patches inland."

As for the week starting on Monday, Met Eireann says conditions are going to become milder but with it comes more rain.

We'll see the worst of it starting on Wednesday when the heavy showers are expected to set in.

That's looking likely to continue into Thursday and Friday, though a more detailed forecast is expected early in the week.

The forecaster added: "Tomorrow Monday will be a bright and dry day with good sunny spells. After a very cold start, frost will clear and temperatures will recover to range 6 to 9 degrees by afternoon.

"Light variable winds, becoming southerly later on west coasts.

"Unsettled conditions will continue for the end of the week with low pressure close to or over Ireland.

"There will be some sunny spells but many areas will see frequent showers.

"Winds will continue fresh southeasterly with daytime temperatures around average for this time of year, 7 to 10C."
