The caution comes as gusts of up to 100km/h are expected the hit the coastal counties.

The warning for the southern counties will expire at 11am, while the alert for the northeastern locations will be valid until 8am.

There will be some sunny spells of Monday, but gale force winds may strike the southwest throughout the afternoon.

"Strong to gale force southerly winds will veer west to southwest by afternoon and moderate. Maximum temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees."

It will be a cold start to Monday night as temperatures are set to drop to as low as 2C.

However, it will get warmer overnight with the mercury expected to rise to as high as 10C by Tuesday morning.

The forecaster added: "Dry and chilly early in the night with minimum temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees occurring before midnight.

"However, cloud will quickly thicken and outbreaks of rain will spread across the country accompanied by freshening southerly winds.

"Temperatures will rise overnight with values ranging 7 to 10 degrees by dawn on Tuesday."
