Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of heavy rain, thunder, flooding and wintry showers ahead of Storm Brendan's arrival

Ireland can expect to be battered by heavy rain, thunder, flooding and wintry showers when Storm Brendan arrives tomorrow.

Met Eireann has issued including two Status Orange alerts for 11 counties, as the west and northwest braces for the onslaught.

The national forecaster revealed the west coast is set to be lashed by high winds gusting up to 130km/h on Monday.

Sunday will be dry at times, but mainly wet as showers pass over the country, with rain pushing in from the Atlantic overnight.

And things will take a turn for the worst on Monday.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Mostly cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle to begin on Monday, with rain soon becoming persistent and heavy near Atlantic coasts.

"Storm Brendan will bring very windy or stormy conditions as the morning unfolds, with heavy (possibly thundery and squally) rain extending eastwards over the country, with spot flooding likely.

"Clearer intervals and showers, some heavy with a risk of hail and thunder, will follow from the west later.

"Strong to gale force and gusty southerly winds will develop in all areas for a time during the day, with severe and damaging gusts, especially in Atlantic and southern coastal areas.

"Winds will veer southwesterly as the heavy rain clears, gradually easing, except in parts of the west and northwest, where gale force winds and the risk of severe gusts will continue.

"There is a significant risk of coastal flooding due to a combination of strong winds, high spring tides and storm surge. Top temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

"Monday night will be cold with clear spells and some showers, some of them wintry. Winds will gradually ease overnight."

The forecaster added: "Tuesday will start off cold and bright with sunny spells and some showers. Rain and sleet will spread from the south through the afternoon and evening.

"There'll be a risk of strong winds also. Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees for most places, but possibly milder in the south. Tuesday night will be mainly dry and cold with frost in places."

Meanwhile, a Status Orange wind warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo will come into effect at 7am on Monday, January 13, and will expire at midnight that night.

A second Status Orange wind alert was issued for counties Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

The warning is valid from 7am on Monday and will expire at 3pm that afternoon.

And a third less severe Status Yellow warning covers the rest of the country.
