Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of 'heavy, persistent rain' but most of country to stay dry and sunny

Parts of Ireland will experience heavy and widespread showers on Sunday - but most of the country will be dry and sunny.

Met Eireann is forecasting a dull day with outbreaks of rain for Ulster.

However, the south of the country is in for a generally dry and sunny day. Highest temperatures will range between 17C and 21C.

A forecaster said: "Dull in the north and northeast today with outbreaks of rain.

"The rain will become fairly widespread and heavy at times through Ulster. Some light patchy rain will affect north Connacht through the afternoon.

"The rest of the country will be generally dry, except for a few passing showers, with the best of the sunshine across the south of the country.

"Highs of 17 to 21 degrees, a little cooler under cloud in the north with light to moderate northwest breezes."

The national forecaster has warned of "persistent" rain continuing into the night in Ulster.

But the rest of the country should remain dry apart from some isolated showers.

A forecaster said: "Much the same this evening and into tonight with persistent and possibly heavy rain continuing in Ulster.

"Elsewhere, it will stay largely dry with variable cloud and just isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of 9 and 12 degrees in light to moderate west to northwest breezes."
