Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of frost and freezing temperatures over May bank holiday weekend

Met Eireann have warned of frost over the bank holiday weekend as temperatures could dip to below freezing.

However conditions will be relatively bright and sunny during the day, with the worst of the chilly weather expected overnight on Saturday and Sunday.

Today will be dry and mild as temperatures reach highs of 15 C, the best of which will be over Munster.

But lows will fall to -1C in some places on Saturday night, with a "widespread" grass frost expected.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cold and breezy tonight, with clear spells.

"Lowest temperatures zero to 3C, with some grass frost in places.

"The odd shower will affect northern coastal areas, but mostly dry otherwise. Moderate north to northeast breezes will be fresh on the coasts."

Moving into the bank holiday weekend further sunny spells are expected, but temperatures are likely to dip sharply at night.

"Saturday will be a bright, dry and mostly sunny day, but with occasional cloudy periods in the afternoon.

"Top temperatures 9 or 10 C, over Ulster, but 11 to 14 C, elsewhere - best over Munster. Fresh north to northeast winds will decrease moderate by afternoon.

"On Saturday night it will be cold, mostly dry and fairly clear.

"Lowest temperatures -1 to plus 2 C, with a widespread grass frost.

"A few showers may affect parts of the north coast. Light variable or northerly breezes will be moderate on exposed coasts.

"Cold to start but with the early grass frost soon clearing, to give a dry, bright and sunny morning.

"More cloud about later, but further sunny spells also. But a few light showers will affect parts of the north coast.

Irish weather forecast: Showers and sunshine today with highs of 15C but chilly nights ahead 

"Fresh and rather cool over Ulster, northern parts of Connacht and Leinster, with highs of just 9 or 10 C, in a moderate northwest to northerly breeze.

"Temperatures higher elsewhere, with top values of 12 to 14 C., in light variable breezes.

"Cold overnight, with lows of zero to plus 3 C, in almost calm conditions, with grass frost in places. A few showers will affect parts of the north coast."
