Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of freezing summer night as temperatures to plunge

Ireland may have recorded its hottest day of the year so far just a few days ago, but some parts of the country are in for freezing cold conditions on Monday night.

Met Eireann is predicting temperatures to plunge to as low as -1C, with grass frost expected in some areas.

Earlier on Monday will be dry and bright, but far cooler than the highs experienced on Saturday.

The forecaster said: "Today will be quite a dry and bright day with sunny spells. Patchy frost clearing after dawn.

"Feeling cool with highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees generally, though reaching 14 degrees in the southwest.

"Light to moderate northeasterly breezes but fresh for a time this morning in the south and east."

A bitterly cold night is in store, with the midlands and the east set for the chilliest conditions.

There will be some rain in the north, and mist patches may form in some areas by Tuesday morning.

The forecaster added: "Tonight will be cold with clear periods with lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees and grass frost in places.

"Patchy drizzle in the north and northwest overnight and some mist patches are possible before dawn as winds will be light northerly or variable."
