Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns of 'distinctly cooler' conditions as temperatures look set to plummet

Chilly nights are ahead for Ireland as temperatures look set to plummet.

Met Eireann has warned that this weekend will be "distinctly cooler".

Parts of the north are to get "appreciable amounts" of rainfall over Saturday and Sunday, despite all areas expected to get good dry spells.

A forecaster said: "Winds having veered to the northwest or north will allow distinctly cooler conditions to prevail next weekend.

"While all areas will get good dry spells, showers will be numerous on both Saturday and Sunday - resulting in the north and northwest getting appreciable amounts of rainfall.

"The nights will be chilly too with some ground frosts possible inland."

Meanwhile, Tuesday will cool and breezy, with the west expected to get the most showers.

The rain will spread eastwards throughout the day. Highest temperatures will range from 12C to 15C.

Met Eireann said: "Cloud will gradually thicken in Atlantic coastal counties, with outbreaks of rain developing around midday.

"The rain will extending eastwards over the country as day goes on, though not reaching Irish Sea coasts until after dark. After a calm start southerly breezes will freshen."

The rain will continue eastwards overnight. Night time temperatures will range between 4C and 7C.

"Outbreaks of rain for a while overnight, but clearer mainly dry conditions will follow east to all areas later tonight. A few passing showers near west coasts before morning.

"Southerly winds veering southwest will slacken. Cool. Minimum temperatures 4 to 7 degrees. A few mist patches inland."
