Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns heavy rain will lead to flooding in parts of Ireland

A wet and windy Wednesday is in store for large chunks of Ireland.

Met Eireann is forecasting heavy rain for the south of the country, which may lead to flooding in coastal areas.

Showers are expected in most areas on Wednesday, while highest temperatures will range from 9C to 11C.

A forecaster said: "Wednesday will be a mostly cloudy day. Showers will occur widely and will merge to spells of heavy rain across much of the south of the country.

"Some spot flooding is possible in coastal areas of the south. Fresh south or southeast winds. Highest temperatures 9C to 11C."

Wednesday night will be milder than previous nights, but it will be windier with some heavy showers forecast.

The Met Eireann forecaster said: "Wednesday night will be mild and windy with showery outbreaks of rain - some heavy."

Meanwhile, Tuesday will see a band of rain spreading to all areas during the afternoon. Highs will range from 9C to 11C.

"Cloudy for a time in all areas today with a band of rain spreading east to all areas.

"Eastern areas will begin dry and mainly dry conditions in turn will follow from the west with sunny spells.

"Fresh southeast winds will veer southwest and slacken. Highest temperatures 9 to 11 degrees."

Tuesday night will have dry spells, but rain in the south and east may become heavy by Wednesday morning. Overnight temperatures will be as low as 1C.

"Tonight will have some good dry and clear spells over the midlands and north with temperatures here falling to range 1C to 3C with slight frost for a time.

"Showers will affect mainly southwest, south and eastern counties later in the night and will be heavy by morning. Moderate to fresh southerly winds."
