Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warns cold spell set to continue as temperatures dip to -1C

Met Eireann has warned a cold spell of weather is set to continue as temperatures dip below freezing tonight and Saturday.

Chilly conditions are expected overnight to start the weekend, with lows of -1C in some parts of the country.

However there is some good news as sunshine is expected in places on Saturday, with any remaining showers set to clear by Sunday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Today will be a dry day with spells of sunshine and just light breezes. Temperatures will stay a bit below normal for this time of year with afternoon values of 6 to 10 degrees.

"Tonight will start dry with temperatures falling close to or a little below freezing in Leinster and Ulster.

"Later in the night, rain will spread from the west and temperatures will rise again. Lowest temperatures between -1 and +3 degrees in light to moderate southeast winds.

"On Saturday morning the rain will clear most of the country but it will stay dull in the east and northeast with further outbreaks of rain. In the west and south it will brighten up with sunshine and showers for the rest of the day.

"It will become breezy with moderate to fresh northwest winds. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees.

"Showers dying out overnight, becoming mostly dry under clearing skies. Minimum temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees as winds ease. Some frost will form where skies clear.

"Mostly if not completely dry for most of Sunday with sunny spells. The best of the sunshine will be through the morning and early afternoon. Max temperatures 7 to 10C.

"It will cloud over from the west in the afternoon with rain arriving in the west just after dark and moving across the country during Sunday evening and early Sunday night."

And looking ahead to next week, longer spells of rain are set to return with experts warning of showers on most days, turning wintry in places.

A forecaster added: "A dry start for most on Monday with sunny spells. Showers in the north and west in the morning will spread eastwards to affect most of the country through the day.

"Showers will be heaviest and most frequent in the north and west and possibly becoming wintry over high ground here.

"A similar story on Tuesday but showers a little less widespread. Again showers heaviest and most frequent in the north and west, where again, some may be wintry over hills.

"Sunny spells also, best away from the west and north coasts."
