Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn of more snow, frost and ice but temperatures will soar this weekend

More snow, frost and ice is expected later this week, but temperatures are likely to soar by the weekend.

Ireland is still braced for more bitterly cold conditions over the next few days, but by the end of the week we could see highs of 13 degrees.

It will also be wet in many parts of the country today and tomorrow, as even more rainfall is expected.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Frost and any icy patches clearing this morning. The day will be cold and bright with good sunshine and scattered heavy rain or hail showers this morning prolonged at first in parts of Ulster.

"Dry in many places this afternoon, as showers become well scattered in temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius.

"Cold dry and clear early tonight with frost and icy patches developing as temperatures fall to between +2 and -2 degrees Celsius, coldest in he north. Thickening cloud will bring rain across Munster, south Leinster and parts of Connacht before morning.

"Cold in many areas with spells of persistent and locally heavy rain, but parts of the north may hold dry and the rain will turn more showery in the south in the afternoon.

"The rain may well turn to sleet or snow at times in some areas but will clear in the evening.

"Afternoon temperatures will range from 3 to 6 degrees typically, but temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees are likely near the south coast."

And it will be much the same on Thursday and Friday, although there will be some sign of warmer temperatures as we head into the weekend.

A forecaster added: "Still cold on Thursday, many places dry for much of the day. Some showers about and rain will move into western counties later in the afternoon and move eastwards during the evening and early night with some falls of sleet or wet snow in places for a time, clearing early Thursday night with wintry showers following into northern counties. Frost and icy stretches likely.

"Breezy with some wintry showers about early Friday in northern and eastern parts but dry in many areas with sunny spells at times. Afternoon temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees Celsius."

But the best of the warm weather is expected by Saturday, as temperatures soar as high as 13C in places, albeit with further rain.

A forecaster said: "Mild and breezy on Saturday, some drizzle in the west but mostly dry early in the day, however strengthening winds will bring persistent rain eastwards during the afternoon and evening. Fresh to strong southerly winds. Highs of 10 to 13 degrees Celsius.

"The rain will clear to showers on Saturday night. Cooler on Sunday with sunny spells and showers. Breezy also. Highs of 7 to 10 degrees Celsius."
