Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn of 'heavy showers' and risk of 'thunderstorms' tonight

Parts of the country were drenched by heavy showers today and forecasters are warning we'll be hit by more rain tonight and tomorrow.

Ballyhaise in Cavan was one of the wettest areas, with Met Eireann recording 3.2mm of rain at its weather station today.

The national forecaster said: "There will be a mix of clear spells and heavy showers overnight, merging to longer spells of rain at times.

"A few squally showers and thunderstorms are possible later in the night which may lead to spot flooding."

And the weekend will get off to a dismal start, with a wet and blustery Friday morning predicted.

However, brighter weather will spread from the west during the morning to leave a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers in the afternoon and evening.

Highest temperatures on Friday will reach 14C to 17C in fresh and gusty southwest to west winds.

Looking ahead to Saturday, things won't be much better, particularly in Munster and Leinster which will be lashed by heavy rainfall.

A forecaster said: "Some bright or short sunny spells on Saturday but showers too, some heavy in northern counties.

"A spell of heavy and thundery rain will affect Munster and south Leinster in the early afternoon and this will affect all but the northwest by nightfall."

And Saturday night will be "very wet" in southern and eastern areas overnight with an ongoing risk of spot flooding.

It will be more showery elsewhere, with lows of 9C to 11C with winds veering northwest by morning.
