Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn of gale force winds tonight and 'widespread' showers on Bank Holiday Monday

Gale force winds are set to lash parts of the country tonight after a dull and damp start to the day, forecasters have revealed.

And there's also bad news for the bank holiday with "widespread" showers of rain set to drench the country.

Met Eireann said: "Today will be dull and damp to start with outbreaks of rain clearing the east early on. It'll then be dry and sunny for a time.

"This afternoon a freshening southwest wind will bring another spell of showery rain to Connacht and Ulster. There'll be scattered showers elsewhere.

"Along with the rain the southwest winds will continue to strengthen through the day, reaching gale force along the west and northwest coast."

But there's some good news for Forbidden Fruit revellers with warmest temperatures forecast for the east, with highs of 15C to 19C expected.

The winds will ease over night, with showers in the north and west but remaining largely dry elsewhere.

Bank Holiday Monday looks set to be a washout with "widespread" showers forecast.

A forecaster said: "There'll be showers, mostly in the north at first then becoming widespread and at times heavy.

"Winds will become light to moderate variable in direction and temperatures in the afternoon will reach between 14C and 16C."

The showers will continue on Monday night in the north and west with the midlands remaining largely dry.

Overnight a spell of persistent and heavy rain will develop along the south coast, moving up over southern and eastern areas before morning.

Some heavy spells look likely, particularly over the mountains. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 7C in the north and 8C or 9C further south.

Heading into Tuesday, more heavy rain will lash the east with scattered showers elsewhere.

However, these will become widespread in the afternoon.

A forecaster said: "Cool, with highs of just 11C to 14C in light northerly or variable breezes.

"The showers will die out overnight and under clear skies temperatures will fall to 4C or 5C degrees."
