Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn more thunder is on the way as Ireland set to be lashed by heavy rain next week

More thunder is on the way as Ireland is set to be lashed by a period of "unsettled and changeable weather" next week.

It will stay warm throughout the week but there will be a risk of both thunder and heavy showers.

And the sunny spell is well and truly over as experts warn of heavy rain in some parts of the country today.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Cloudy this morning over much of the eastern half of the country, with outbreaks of rain, heavy in parts of the east and north, with a risk of thunder.

"Brighter conditions developing in Munster and Connacht, with scattered showers, will extend gradually northeastwards, reaching the northeast coast towards evening.

"However, some of the showers may be heavy and thundery, especially in parts of the east and southeast.

"Maximum temperatures 16 to 20C.

"Monday will be wet and windy, with rain extending northeastwards to all parts during the morning and early afternoon, heavy and possibly thundery in places, with a risk of spot flooding.

"Brighter conditions, with showers, will follow during the afternoon, but some of the showers will be heavy, with a risk of thunder, especially in the west and southwest.

"Maximum temperatures 16 to 19 or 20C, in fresh to strong southeasterly winds, later veering southerly and easing a little."

And next week looks set to be a washout, with heavy showers and outbreaks of thunder expected.

A forecaster added: "Unsettled and changeable weather for the rest of the week, with above average rainfall in most parts.

"Dry in most areas at first on Tuesday, with some bright or sunny spells, but scattered showers in the southwest and west will gradually become more widespread and a spell of heavier rain will extend across much of the southern half of the country during the afternoon and evening, with a risk of thunder.

"Dry in many areas on Wednesday, but with a good deal of cloud and a few isolated showers. Outbreaks of rain will develop in west and southwest coastal areas later in the afternoon, extending gradually eastwards later Wednesday and Wednesday night.

"Current indications suggest that there will be bright or sunny spells each day, with scattered showers, most of the showers in west Ulster, Connacht and west Munster, some of them heavy, with a risk of thunder, especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday."
