Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn more hail, rain and thunder on the way as temperatures plummet to -3C

More hail, rain and thunder is expected today as temperatures are set to drop as low as -2C tonight.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning for all of Ireland expires at 9am on Sunday, but there is no end in sight to the freezing weather.

There will also be further snow tonight, however most of that will fall on higher ground and only in small amounts.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A cold, bright and breezy start, with frost clearing. The day will bring a mix of sunny spells and showers, some of the showers wintry over high ground.

"There will also be a risk of hail and thunder. The showers most frequent over the western half of the country during the morning, becoming more widespread through the afternoon. Afternoon maximums only 5 to 7 degrees, in brisk westerly winds, strong on coasts.

"Showers becoming scattered and confined to the western half of the country early tonight, with long clear spells developing in the east and southeast.

"A cold night with a widespread frost and some icy patches. Minimum temperatures of minus 2 to plus 1 degrees, coldest in the east. Winds will be moderate west to southwest, fresh on west coasts.

"The showers in the west will become increasingly wintry towards morning, with some sleet or snow on high ground, however amounts will be small."

Next week is looking cool and showery with a frost most nights, although conditions could become more unsettled towards next weekend.

A forecaster added: "A cold start to Monday, with a widespread frost and some icy patches. A mostly dry day to begin with sunny spells, however - much like today - showers in the west of the country will push further eastwards, becoming widespread by afternoon.

"Some of the showers will be wintry with a risk of hail and thunder also. A cool, blustery day with highs of just 5 to 7 degrees.

"Rain clearing from northern areas early in the night, with scattered showers lingering about western coastal counties. Otherwise a largely dry night with clear spells allowing temperatures to fall to between zero and plus 3 degrees, coldest in the east."

And it will stay cold on Tuesday, with lows of -3C overnight.

A forecaster said: "Tuesday will begin mostly cloudy with patchy light rain quickly clearing from southern Munster through the morning. Showers in the west will push inland and become more widespread through the afternoon. Highs of 5 to 7 degrees in a moderate westerly breeze."
