Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann warn heavy rain set to lash Ireland tonight with wet week in store

Parts of the country are set to be lashed by heavy showers as a band of rain moves across the country tonight.

The worst of the wet weather is set to clear most areas by Monday morning, but parts of Ulster will be hit by more heavy rainfall tomorrow.

Forecasters are warning to prepare for an unsettled week of weather, with both sunshine and showers expected throughout the next few days.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Today will be dry and bright over the midlands and east of the country, with occasional sunny spells.

"Cloudier in more western areas, with some patches of light drizzle, edging slowly inland from the coastal fringes. Some showers breaking out in eastern areas in the evening also.

"Top temperatures 15 to 19 C, best in eastern areas, in moderate southwesterly or variable breezes.

"Tonight will be breezy and cloudy for much of the night with fairly widespread rain, heavy in places. But the rain will clear all but eastern coastal counties towards dawn."

And next week will be largely wet and windy, with rain expected in many areas up until Thursday at least.

A forecaster added: "Early rain in eastern areas clearing quickly on Monday morning.

"The day will be fresh, bright and breezy, with sunny spells and scattered showers, some of the showers will be heavy in parts of Ulster. Top temperatures of 13 to 17 C, best in the southeast.

"Rain with strengthening south to southwest winds will move into western and northern areas during Tuesday morning, but much of the rest of the country should stay mostly dry until evening but becoming rather windy. Highs of 15 to 18C.

"A breezy start on Wednesday with fresh and gusty southwest to west winds. The day will be bright with sunny spells and well scattered light showers.

"Winds easing gradually and afternoon highs of 15 to 18."

However there is some good news on the horizon, as next weekend looks set to be drier and warmer, as pressure starts to build from the south.
