Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann updates Status Yellow rainfall warning to cover all 26 counties

Ireland is set to be battered by lashings of rain tonight as Met Eireann updated to cover the entire country.

Flash floods of up to 40mm are expected after the forecaster revealed all 26 counties are at risk.

The alert kicked in at 7pm until 7am tomorrow morning, with all of Ireland affected.

But the washout is far from over as weather experts are predicting rain for the weekend.

Heavy and thundery downpours in Connacht and Ulster will push north, making way for bright spells on Friday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “On Friday morning, heavy possibly thundery rain over parts of Connacht and Ulster will clear northwards.

“Brighter conditions with showers will follow through the day. Many will be heavy and prolonged with thunderstorms and the risk of hail.

“Local downpours could potentially lead to hazardous driving conditions and flash flooding.

“Highest temperatures of 17C to 19C. South-east winds mostly moderate to fresh and gusty but strong on many south and east coasts and touching gale force at times along the southeast coast.”

Tomorrow night will see more showers but they won’t be quite as heavy as earlier in the day. A forecaster added: “There’ll be further showers on Friday night, though they won’t be as widespread or as heavy as during the day. Lowest temperatures of 13C or 14C.”

Looking to the weekend, more rain is expected in the northern half of the country while the south will benefit from drier intervals. The weather chiefs said: “There’ll be showers or longer spells of rain, especially over the northern half of the country.

“Later in the day and on Saturday night, showery rain will extend southeastwards to all areas.

“Highest temperatures of 17C to 21C with fresh south-west winds, later decreasing moderate, becoming north-westerly.”

Sunday will be a cooler, fresher day but the nicer of the two this weekend across most parts.

Lingering overnight rain will clear eastern counties and most areas will enjoy a dry day with just scattered showers.
