Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann shares New Year's Eve forecast

Met Eireann has shared its New Year's Eve forecast - and it's largely good news.

It is likely to stay dry and temperatures will reach highs of 7 degrees tonight, although it will be colder in places with lows of 2C with some areas seeing a touch of frost.

And it will remain relatively mild into the start of 2020, but plenty more rain is expected.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A bright morning on Tuesday in the north of the country with frost and a few patches of fog clearing in Ulster and north Connacht.

"Cloudier and milder further south with some patchy drizzle lingering in some parts this morning. This will largely clear by midday, with all areas then seeing a mostly dry day.

"Dry and mostly cloudy around the country at midnight, temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

"Continuing dry and mostly cloudy for the rest of the night with minimum temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees, with a touch of frost in places, in light southerly winds.

"Continuing predominantly dry and mostly cloudy for the start of the New Year, with some brightness breaking through in parts of the south and east.

"Maximum temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees, in a strengthening southerly breeze, becoming strong on western coasts later."

Further showers are set to arrive towards the end of the week but temperatures will continue to rise, with highs of 12C possible on Thursday.

A forecaster said: "A wet and windy day. Rain will spread from the west to all areas during the morning and early afternoon.

"Rain will be heaviest and most persistent in the west, but rather light and patchy in nature further east. A mild day with maximum temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

"South to southwest winds will remain fresh to strong throughout Thursday and reach near gale on coasts.

"A clearance to showers on Thursday night with winds veering northwesterly and easing. Lows of 3 to 6 degrees.
