Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann reveals summer sunshine on the way as temperatures to soar up to 25C next week 'and possibly higher'

We are set for the hottest week of the summer so far as Met Eireann predicts temperatures will hit up to a sweltering 25C next week and "possibly even higher".

Weather experts revealed there will be extended periods of "summer sunshine", but it's not all good news, with some heavy thundery showers expected in places.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Latest indications are for very warm and humid weather, with temperatures several degrees above normal.

"Temperatures will range from 19 to 25C, though possibly even higher.

"Whilst there will be lengthy spells of summer sunshine, some heavy thundery showers will break out from time to time too.

"Easterly breezes will be replaced by more southerly ones later in the week."

Meanwhile the warm and sunny conditions will also be in place this weekend with highs of up to 20C expected on Saturday and Sunday.

A forecaster added: "Much of Ireland will hold fully dry on Saturday with some sunny spells.

"Just isolated showers though the day, before heavier showers move into the southwest during the evening.

"Highest temperatures will range 15 to 19 or 20C, in moderate southeast breezes (mildest inland away from south and east facing coasts)."

However while temperatures will remain high, Sunday is expected to be wet, with thundery rain and even possible flooding in some areas during the day.

"A locally damp start on Sunday with heavy rain also affecting southern counties.

"Heavy thundery rain in the south will slowly push northwards through the day with high accumulations possible in some relatively short durations. Spot flooding is likely.

"Ulster and may however hold dry and bright until later in the afternoon, with rain eventually easing off in the south during the evening.

"Feeling humid, with highs of 15 to 20C (south to north), all in a moderate easterly breezes.

"Further widespread rain or showers for Sunday night, with a chance of a few thunderstorms. "
