Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann reveal more thunder on the way next week despite sweltering temperatures

Ireland will be battered by more thunder showers next week despite heatwave-like temperatures.

Two Status Yellow rainfall warnings are in place for 14 counties on Sunday, with downpours bringing up to 40mm of rain in parts.

And while the cautions will expire by 6am on Monday, the national forecaster is warning that more thundery showers are on the way.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: “Mist and fog will gradually lift on Monday to leave a mix of hazy sunshine and a few heavy, possibly thundery downpours.

“Feeling warm and humid with highest temperatures ranging 18 to 22 degrees in mostly light, variable breezes. Mist and fog may linger along some coasts.

“Our weather is turning increasingly mild and humid over the coming days and with that increasingly unsettled too.

“While there will be some lovely sunshine at times, but there will also be spells of heavy and thundery rain or showers, with sea mist and fog in places too.”

As reported over the weekend, the humid conditions are also conducive to the spread of potato blight, which led to Met Eireann issuing an ‘Environmental Warning’ last Thursday.

Tuesday will start-off bright and sunny, with much of the overnight fog clearing early in the day.

Despite temperatures hitting a sizzling 22 degrees, heavy thundery downpours are set to develop throughout the afternoon.

The forecaster added: “By mid week and towards the end of the week temperatures will rise into the mid twenties and locally higher.

“Night time values will also move into the mid teens, so very warm and humid.

“There will be spells of warm sunshine each day, hazy at times, but some heavy thundery downpours in places as well. Sea mist and fog will also form, with some patches drifting onshore locally also.”

Hay fever sufferers are also being warned of the high pollen count currently in the air.
