Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann puts 17 counties on yellow alert as gale force winds set to batter Ireland

A wind warning is in place for 17 counties as gale force winds are set to batter Ireland.

Met Eireann issued the Status Yellow weather alert on Monday as it predicts gusts of up to 110km/h may hit some areas.

But despite the windy conditions on Tuesday, it will be warm for this time of year with highs of 14C.

The caution is in place for Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo.

The weather warning will expire at 8pm on Tuesday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Windy today with strong south to southwest winds, reaching gale force along west and northwest coasts.

"Later in the day, southwest winds may reach gale force in inland parts as well.

"Overall dull with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Mild for the time of year, with afternoon temperatures ranging 11C to 14C."

Winds will weaken overnight, while temperatures will begin to drop to as low as 3C.

The forecaster added: "The winds will gradually moderate tonight and become westerly.

"It will become largely dry as well with clear spells. Lowest temperatures will be between 3C and 6C."
