Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts temperatures to plummet and heavy downpours this week

The country’s glorious sunshine and balmy weekend temperatures are set to plummet and be replaced by lots of cloud and showers during the next 24 hours.

But, there will be some respite for the south-east and in Leinster on Monday with temperatures hitting 21C while on Tuesday the mercury will reach 20C.

The west is set to fare worst on Tuesday with bucketloads of rain, while the east is set for similar scattered and miserable downpours on Wednesday.

John Eagleton of Met Éireann said: “It’ll be a mixture of cloud, hazy sunshine and temperatures will be about 20C or 21C in the east of the country.

“It won’t be a bad day, it’ll be pretty good.

“And then there’s rain working its way across the country slowly on Monday night and into Tuesday, but many places will still be dry on Tuesday.

“If you’re on the west coast on Tuesday on your holidays there it mightn’t be very nice and that will be Connacht, Munster and the northwest.”

The forecaster said the rest of the country will have much better weather on Tuesday before the unsettled weather moves eastwards.

He added: “I think the east of the country will stay dry until late on Tuesday evening when the rain will come over.

“Then on Wednesday things could actually be reversed.

“It might be a nice, bright, fresh day in the west, but it could be damp and rainy here in the east and it mightn’t clear until the evening.

“The way these slow moving fronts come and go they have a mind of their own.

“It will get a bit cooler on Tuesday and Wednesday, it’ll be down to 16C or 17C which still isn’t bad for the end of August.”

Mr Eagleton said weather conditions will gradually worsen in most parts of Ireland with much more rain and cloud.

“We will get back to more unsettled weather and on Wednesday it will back down to 16C or 17C, pretty much around the country.

“The east of the country could get rain the first half of Wednesday, it’ll be slow to clear while it’ll be bright in the west.

“After that there is an improvement towards next weekend.

“And temperatures could rise up to 21C or 22C next Friday and Saturday. It could become warm again; maybe not as warm as it was over the weekend but not bad as we head towards next weekend.”
