Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts sleet and frost as Status Yellow snow-ice warning remains in place

Met Eireann has warned that sleet and frost will hit later today and overnight as a Status Yellow snow-ice weather warning remains in place.

The alert began at 10pm on Tuesday night and will stay in effect until 11am this morning, with icy conditions and possible snowfall expected.

The warning is in place for Wicklow, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Conditions will remain cold for the rest of the day, as temperatures dip to just above freezing overnight.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Many areas dry this morning with a few sunny spells, but mostly cloudy today with scattered showers.

"The showers will become more prolonged in the north during the forenoon and in other areas as the day goes on, with sleet on hills.

"A cold day in a strong northerly wind. Highest temperatures 6 to 9 degrees.

"Tonight will be cloudy and breezy with dry spells in all areas, but with scattered outbreaks of rain also. The rain will be light generally and mainly affecting eastern areas with mist.

"Northeast winds will be fresh and gusty.

"Lowest temperatures 1 to 4 degrees with a slight grass frost during any clear spells."

However there is an improved outlook for the week ahead, as Met Eireann expects conditions to become "progressively milder".

The weekend will be largely dry and bright as temperatures hit the low teens on Saturday, with some "sunny spells" predicted on Sunday.
