Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts mixed bag with early sunshine giving way to showers and even thunderstorms

Sunshine will turn to showers in many parts of the country in a weather theme that will continue for much of the week.

Met Eireann's forecast for today states that it will be fair at first, but there will be showers throughout the day, most frequent in the north and west of Ireland.

The rain will be heaviest in the afternoon and early evening, but it'll be a drier day across the south of the country.

Happily, we can expect temperatures of between 19 and 22 degrees in moderate southerly winds.

Showers will spread from Connacht and Ulster this evening and early tonight to Munster overnight and Leinster in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Met Eireann also says the west and north can expect longer spells of rain and a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

Temperatures will only drop to 12 or 13 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds.

On Tuesday, showers will be again be heavier and merging to give longer spells of rain with the risk of thunder in Ulster and Connacht.

The sunny spells between showers will be longer in the south, though.

Highest temperatures will once again be between 17 and 22 degrees, cooler in the north with moderate to fresh southwest winds, which will be gusty around showers.

For the national outlook of the rest of the week, forecasters said: "Tuesday night will be mainly dry through most of the country but showers will continue in the north.

"Lowest temperatures 12 or 13 degrees with light southwest to west winds.

"On Wednesday it will be dry at first with showers becoming widespread during the afternoon, then dying away again in the evening, the south of the country will once again see the best of any sunshine.

"There'll be spells of warm sunshine between showers with the winds becoming mainly westerly in direction.

"Temperatures will be between 19 and 22 degrees in the afternoon and once again 12 or 13 degrees at night.

"At the moment Thursday looks like being the driest day of the week and in light variable winds and sunshine temperatures are expected to reach 20 to 22 degrees. It'll be warm and humid overnight.

"Current indications suggest a spell of heavy and widespread rain coming from a sub-tropical source on Friday will bring warm and humid conditions with the chance of thunderstorms, with a return to sunshine and showers with southwesterly winds once again for next weekend."
