Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts miserable day with rain warning, wintry showers and gale force winds

It's going to be a miserable Friday as a wet, windy and wintry day is in store for Ireland.

A rainfall warning issued on Thursday by Met Eireann is still in place for eight counties.

And parts of the country may also experience some wintry showers, while gale force winds may batter coastlines.

The Status Yellow rain alert is in place for South Donegal, Leitrim and parts of Sligo.

The caution is valid until 8pm, as up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall.

A yellow wind warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry will expire at 9am on Friday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "A cool, blustery and mostly cloudy start with widespread showers over the north of the country.

"Largely dry to begin further south and east with some bright or sunny spells.

"Cloud will quickly increase from the southwest with outbreaks of rain arriving on the southwest coast by early afternoon.

"This patchy rain will spread to much of Munster through the evening.

"Showers becoming more frequent elsewhere, with some turning wintry later over high ground.

"Highs of 6 to 8°C. Westerly winds will be strong and gusty, reaching gale force on coasts."

Showers will turn "increasingly wintry" overnight, as temperatures are set to plunge to as low as 0C.

Snow will accumulate over high ground, while gale force winds will continue to affect coasts.

The forecaster added: "Widespread showers, most frequent in the west, will turn increasingly wintry on Friday night, with some snow accumulating over high ground.

"Minimum temperatures generally ranging from zero to plus 3 degrees. Westerly winds becoming strong with gales on coasts."
