Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts 'dull' day with 'persistent' outbreaks of rain

Bring your brolly if you're heading out today as Met Eireann has forecast a dull day with heavy and persistent spells of rain in parts of the country.

And music-lovers heading to Bon Jovi this weekend should pack a raincoat - as Met Eireann is forecasting "heavy showers" for both days.

The national forecaster says low pressure is set to stay close to Ireland this weekend bringing a mix of heavy rain and some sunshine.

Looking ahead to today, a forecaster said: "Dull and mostly breezy today with outbreaks of rain in the east and south, turning persistent and occasionally heavy.

"Drier and milder across Atlantic counties but with limited sunny spells. Top temperatures 12C to 17C, coolest in the east. Northerly winds will be moderate to fresh in strength."

They continued: "Outbreaks of rain will continue overnight, mostly across the eastern half of Ireland. Some further persistent falls are likely, especially along Irish Sea coasts.

"Lowest temperatures 7C to 10C. Northerly breezes will remain moderate occasionally fresh in strength."

Thursday looks set to be another dull and damp start across eastern counties with some lingering falls of rain.

It will become drier everywhere into the afternoon, with limited sunny spells.

Overall, it will be a cool day countrywide with afternoon highs of 10C to 14C, best values further south. Northwest breezes will be mainly moderate.

Conditions will stay relatively cool out to the end of the week with sunshine and heavy showers most days.
