Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predicts colder temperatures 'below seasonal norm' will continue into late November

Irish people today wake up to frost and freezing fog - and it's not set to get any warmer in the coming days.

Met Eireann's forecast for the next week predicts that temperatures will continue to be "a couple of degrees below the seasonal norm".

Motorists are also warned this morning that the frost and freezing fog will be slow to clear in places, leading to difficult driving conditions.

A Status Yellow weather warning for low temperatures remains in place for the whole of Connacht as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary until 10am.

The warning, issued on Sunday, reads: "Very cold tonight. Minimum air temperatures will range -2 to -4 degrees Celsius. Widespread severe frost with the risk of icy patches. Some pockets of freezing fog also."

Today, Monday, will be dry and sunny later on with the mercury hitting up to 9C.

However it will be a good deal lower where that fog lingers into the afternoon, forecasters said.

Light variable winds will back southeasterly later in the day and freshen along Atlantic coasts.

Tonight, cloud will come in from the west with rain forecasted for the west coast overnight, spreading eastwards into Connact and west Munster.

It won't quite hit freezing - lowest temps between 1C and 4C - but it will be coldest in the north, with a light to moderate southeast wind.

On Tuesday, more rain will move eastwards over the country, finally arriving in the east in the early evening.

At that time it will become dry and sunny in the west.

Temperatures are expected to be between 7C and 11C with moderate southeast winds, fresh in the north, and veering southerly for a time.

That rain in the east is expected to turn heavy at times on Tuesday night, with the possibility of snow on the tops of the Wicklow Mountains.

Met Eireann says there will be showers in the southwest and south, with the rest of the country seeing drier conditions.

Temperatures will fall to between 1C and 3C, a little higher in the southwest, with light to moderate southeast to east winds.

The forecast for the rest of the week from Met Eireann is as follows: "Wednesday will see the unsettled weather continue and it will be breezy with a moderate to fresh southeast wind becoming strong at the coasts.

"Temperatures will still be a couple of degrees lower than usual for the time of year at between 8 and 10 degrees and there'll be rain or showers at times. The night should be frost free.

"Thursday will be similar with a moderate to fresh southeast to south wind, sunny spells and scattered showers and temperatures still on the low side.

"The unsettled picture continues through Friday with the winds expected to fall lighter, there'll be more persistent rain in the south and east and showers elsewhere.

"The further outlook to next weekend is for continued unsettled weather with rain or showers at times, temperatures a couple of degrees below the seasonal norm and winds from a variable direction."
