Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predict temperatures well below zero as cold snap hits

Temperatures are set to drop as low as -3C later this week as conditions continue to get colder.

Weather chiefs are predicting severe ice some nights this week with a chance of wintry falls on higher ground.

Daytime conditions will be chilly but should stay over 5C at all times before the inevitable overnight drop.

Tonight will see temperatures dip as low as -1C before a drop to -3C on Thursday night.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Mostly cloudy today with outbreaks of light rain lingering in southern areas through the morning.

"This mix of mist, light rain and drizzle will largely clear through the morning and early afternoon and it will be a largely dry day for most.

"Cool, with highs of only 6 to 8 degrees in light to moderate westerly winds.

"Mainly dry tonight with a mix of cloud and clear spells. However cloud will increase in the south with perhaps a little drizzle in southern coastal areas by morning.

"A cold, frosty night with minimum temperatures of -1 to +2 degrees, in light winds.

"Largely dry on Thursday. The northern half of the province will have some clear, bright spells. Further south, thicker cloud will linger through the day with patches of light rain or drizzle never too far away from the south coast.

"Cooler than normal, in a moderate northeast breeze, with maximum temperatures again only reaching 6 to 8 degrees.

"Dry, cold and mostly clear with a widespread sharp frost overnight. Lows of -3 to +1 degrees, coldest away from the east coast, in a light to moderate northeast breeze."

This trend of cold nights is to continue into the weekend with Met Eireann saying it's "colder than usual" weather.

The forecaster added: "High pressure becomes the main influence on our weather, bringing mostly settled conditions with lots of dry weather and light winds, but colder than normal with frosty nights."
