Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predict mixed week to come with mild and freezing days

It's going to be a mixed week with Met Eireann forecasting a mild St Patrick's Day before temperatures take a dive.

The week will begin mild with plenty of rain across the country and wind for good measure.

Conditions won't be too cold overnight with little chance of being greeted by a frozen windscreen when you wake up on St Patrick's Day.

Tuesday itself will be a much warmer day than we have been experiencing with temperatures as high as 12C - however it will take a considerable dip the following night.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "After a cold and frosty start with some mist and fog patches, it will brighten up to give a mostly dry morning with sunny spells.

"However cloud will increase and rain will spread into Western areas during the afternoon, heavy at times. The rain will move to remaining parts during the evening but will become lighter and more patchier.

"It will become breezy and blustery across the country as southwesterly winds gradually freshen. Highest temperatures 8 to 10 degrees.

"Patchy rain in the East and South for a time early tonight. Otherwise variable cloud and some scattered showers. Min temps around 4 to 6 degrees with some mist patches forming as winds ease.

"Tomorrow, further spells of rain spreading in from the Atlantic, heavy at times, but it'll be drier in Southern counties with just some patchy drizzle until after dark.

"Max temps ranging from 8 degrees in the North to a milder 12 degrees in the South where will be blustery."

Tuesday night will be chilly but it will be Wednesday when temperatures dip as low as -2C.

The forecaster added: "On Tuesday night, rain in the North and West will move southeastwards to remaining parts, with a clearance to mainly dry conditions following and it will turn colder.

"Lowest temperatures 1 to 4 degrees, coldest in Ulster and Connacht with some ground frost. Winds veering west to northwest and decreasing light to moderate with the clearance.

"On Wednesday, any lingering overnight rain in the Southeast soon clearing to give a bright day with sunny spells. Dry in many areas but some scattered rain and hail showers likely in the Northwest. Max 6 to 9 degrees, north to south in light West to Northwesterly breezes, fresher off the Ulster coast.

"Cold, mainly dry and frosty on Wednesday night with lowest temperatures of 0 to minus 2 degrees. Some mist and fog patches also with very light West or Northwest breezes."
