Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predict highs of 23C today - but 'heavy showers' are on the way

More warm weather is expected today as temperatures hit 23C - but enjoy it while it lasts as some "heavy showers" are on the way in the coming days.

Tuesday is set to be another mild day after a glorious weekend, but conditions will turn wetter later this week.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Hazy sunny spells and showers today, some of the showers heavy and prolonged.

"Feeling warm and humid with top temperatures ranging 18 to 23C in moderate south or southwest breezes.

"Becoming mainly dry early in the night with just the odd shower.

"However, a spell of heavy rain will move in from the Atlantic to affect the west and north later. Lowest temperatures 12 to 15C in moderate to fresh southwest breezes."

And the wet weather will continue into tomorrow and the second half of this week, with rain first arriving in the west before spreading throughout the country by Friday.

A forecaster added: "Wednesday will start cloudy and damp in most areas with outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards across the country.

"The rain will become lighter and more showery during the afternoon with some bright or sunny spells developing in the west.

"Maximum temperatures of 17 to 20C in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

"Sunshine and passing showers on Thursday with the showers frequent in Connacht and Ulster. Top temperatures 17 to 20C in fresh westerly winds.

"Becoming mostly dry early on Thursday night but rain will develop in Munster before dawn, extending nationwide Friday AM. Lowest temperatures 10 to 13C.

"Rain will extend nationwide during Friday morning, turning heavy in places and accompanied by freshening south or southwest winds. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21C."

And a mixed weekend is in store, with highs of 23C on Sunday but blustery winds and prolonged spells of rain expected in many areas on Saturday.
