Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predict highs of 12C but 'heavy' rain on the way tonight

Temperatures will soar to highs of 12C today after several days of freezing conditions.

However, Met Eireann say we'll also see some patchy rain and drizzle in the morning before it lifts to reveal a mostly cloudy day.

A forecaster said: "The afternoon will be mostly dry, with some brightness breaking through in places and just the odd shower in the northwest.

"A blustery day with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds veering westerly, winds fresh to strong in the north with gales on northwest and north coasts. Maximum temperatures 10C to 12C."

And parts of the country will be lashed by "heavy and persistent" rain tonight.

Met Eireann added: "Rain reaches the west coast around midnight and spreads eastwards to all areas by dawn. The rain will be heavy and persistent in places, especially on higher ground in the west."

Temperatures will drop to lows of 5C to 6C in the north and east, coldest in the early part of the night. It will be a little milder further south and west with lows of 6C to 9C. Southwesterly winds will become strong near coasts.

Meanwhile, Friday will start off dull with rain in many areas. The rain will clear eastwards with scattered showers following from the west.

Highest temperatures of 10C to 12C degrees with fresh southwest winds, which will become strong in the evening and night near west and north coasts.

Heading into the weekend, Saturday will see a mix of dry periods and scattered showers with highs of 6C to 10C.

And we're set to shiver again on Saturday night with cold frosty conditions expected.

A forecaster said: "Saturday night will be cold with frost over the northern half of the country. Rain will spread from the south overnight, falling as sleet in places."
