Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann predict 'changeable' conditions with frost and fog in run-up to Christmas

Met Eireann are predicting "changeable" conditions in the run-up to Christmas.

The forecaster has warned of cold nights with frost and fog in the coming days but it will be generally dry in the daytime from Friday onwards.

The changeable weather will follow lashing rain and high winds today.

The south and southeast is set to be hammered by heavy rain while strong winds are expected nationwide.

Two weather warnings are in place throughout the day with 40mm of rain and 110km/h gusts expected.

A Status Yellow rain alert is in place for eight counties from 4am until 7pm.

It reads: "Rainfall warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford.

"Heavy rain will push northeastwards on Wednesday with rainfall accumulations of 30-40mm expected with the risk of localised flooding."

The second warning is for winds of up to 110km/h covering the entire country.

It begins at 12pm on Wednesday and will end at midnight on Thursday.

Thursday, December 19

Thursday will see outbreaks of rain with the best of any bright spells in the west of the country. The rain may turn heavy in the east during the afternoon and evening.

Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C with mostly moderate south to southeast breezes.

Friday, December 20

Friday will see frost and fog will gradually clear to reveal a mainly dry day with some bright or sunny spells developing.

However, showery rain may develop in eastern coastal counties for a time and later in the day, showers will develop near south and west coasts.

It will be cold with highest temperatures of 4C to 8C with light breezes. On Friday night, fog and ground frost will develop in many areas. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 4C.

Saturday, December 21

Saturday will be cold and mainly dry. Fog will linger in some areas for much of the day. But bright or sunny spells will develop also.

There is a risk of rain developing for a time in the south later in the day. Highest temperatures of 5C to 8C with light southerly breezes.

On Saturday night, frost and fog will develop.

Sunday, December 22

Sunday will be a cold but mainly dry day with bright or sunny spells developing.

There is a risk of scattered showers near south and west coasts. Highest temperatures of 5C to 8C with mostly light southwest breezes.
