Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann lifts Status Yellow rainfall warning for five counties

Thirteen counties are under a Status Yellow rainfall warning as heavy rain batters large parts of Ireland.

Met Eireann initially issued the alert for 18 counties and warned of a risk of thunderstorms and flooding.

But the national forecaster has lifted the caution for Kerry, Kilkenny, Wexford, Carlow and Laois.

The warning will remain in place for Connacht, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford until midnight on Monday.

Met Eireann warned of a risk of thunderstorms and flooding on Monday, as heavy rain showers move in from the Atlantic.

Areas in the west, midlands and south are to experience "heavy bursts" of rain throughout the day. Highest temperatures will range from 10C to 14C.

A forecaster said: "Cloudy today with heavy and persistent rain in many areas and the potential for flooding.

"There is also a risk of some thunder. Later in the day drier conditions will extend into the west and southwest but further spells of rain will continue elsewhere.

"Highest temperatures 10 to 14 degrees. Winds will be mostly light to moderate and variable in direction, but strong and gusty along south and southwest coasts."

Temperatures will drop to as low as 3C on Monday night.

Rain will continue overnight, with Met Eireann warning of "heavy falls" early in the night.

It will become drier is most areas as the night progresses, with mist and fog patches forming on Tuesday morning.

The forecaster said: "Further outbreaks of rain tonight with some heavy falls at first, but the rain will become patchier overnight with drier weather for most areas by morning.

"Mist and fog will form widely in near calm conditions. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees."
