Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues two warnings for 12 counties including status orange level

Weather warnings have been issued for 12 counties with Donegal set to face the brunt of brutal winds.

A Status Yellow wind alert is in place for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Louth, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo and Clare.

Meanwhile, Donegal has been hit with a Status Orange caution.

Speaking about the Orange Warning, a Met Eireann forecaster said: "Southwest winds veering west to northwest will reach mean wind speeds of 60 to 75km/h with gusts of 100 to 120km/h.

"Due to a combination of waves, spring tides and surge, the possibility of coastal flooding is increased on Thursday."

The caution begins at 8am on Thursday and lasts until midday.

The warning for the 11 other counties begins at 4am on Thursday and lasts until 6pm.

The website states: "Southwest winds veering west to northwest will reach mean wind speeds of 50 to 65km/h and gusts of 80 to 110km/h.

"Due to a combination of waves, spring tides and surge, the possibility of coastal flooding is increased along western and northwestern coasts on Thursday."

This adds to a status yellow ice warning that is again only in place for Donegal.

The warning begins at 3pm today and will be in place until 8am tomorrow when it will be replaced by the strong gusts.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Showers will turn increasingly wintry during Wednesday with a mix of hail, sleet and snow, leading to icy conditions on untreated surfaces. Some localised accumulations will occur."

The rest of the country has thus far avoided any ice warnings although there is some chance of snow in parts.

The forecaster added: "Blustery and showery today, with some sunshine. The showers will be widespread, merging to give longer spells of rain at times, with a risk of hail and a risk of thunder. The showers will turn increasingly wintry towards evening with snow on higher ground, particularly in west Ulster.

"Afternoon highs of 4 to 6 degrees in the northwest, with 7 to 10 degrees elsewhere. It will be much colder everywhere by early evening in fresh to strong and gusty southwest winds.

"Scattered wintry showers continuing tonight, most frequent in the west of the country. It will be a cold and windy night with fresh to strong southwesterly winds, and gales along western and northwestern coasts. Lowest temperatures of -1 to + 2 degrees with frost and a risk of ice."
