Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues TWO warnings amid flooding risk as heavy wind and rain set to hit

Met Eireann have warned of a flooding risk in parts of the country as Ireland is set to be battered by heavy wind and rain over the coming days.

Two Status Yellow warnings for wind and rain are currently in place, with gusts of up to 110km/h possible today.

However there is no end in sight to the miserable weather, as Met Eireann confirmed further warnings are likely to arrive over the next week.

The national forecaster has issued a weather advisory, which takes effect on Monday and will last until the end of Thursday.

It reads: "We are entering a period of very unsettled weather. Further warnings for strong winds and rainfall are likely to be issued in the coming days.

"A combination of spring tides and gales may lead to coastal flooding at times."

Meanwhile a Yellow warning for heavy rainfall will expire by 3pm today, with weather experts warning of possible localised flooding across all of Connacht and Donegal.

And a second alert for strong winds will expire at 11am, with Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Kerry in the firing line as 110km/h gusts batter the west coast.

A Met Eireann forecaster explained: "This morning will be mild and windy. Persistent rain in Ulster, Connacht and west Munster, will gradually extend southeastwards, heavy at times with a risk of spot flooding.

"Clearer weather with scattered showers will follow from the northwest this afternoon and evening.

"Strong, gusty southerly winds will veer westerly and ease as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees.

"Clear spells and scattered showers tonight and a longer spell of rain in the south overnight. Cold with lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees and ground frost developing in places."

Tomorrow will be relatively settled, but the wild weather will return by Monday, with heavy, stormy showers expected.

A forecaster added: "Sunday will be a bright day with sunny spells and well scattered showers, these mainly in the west. Cold with highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees and light to moderate southwest breezes.

"Monday will be very windy, especially in coastal areas. It may become stormy for a time along the west cost with very strong and very gusty southerly winds.

"Heavy rain will develop in the west in the morning and will spread quickly across the country with a risk of spot flooding. Clear spells and showers will follow from the west later.

"It will continue windy or blustery. Highest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees.

"Tuesday will start off cold and bright with sunny spells and some showers. Rain and sleet will spread from the south through the afternoon and evening. there'll be a risk of strong winds also.

"Highest temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees for most places, but possibly milder in the south."

More showers will arrive on Wednesday, but it will stay largely dry with some sunny spells.

But Thursday could bring further wet and windy weather, with experts predicting some stormy conditions in the west of the country.
