Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues two Status Yellow wind warnings for seven counties as 100km/h gusts expected

Met Eireann has issued two Status Yellow wind warnings for seven counties as gusts of up to 100km/h are set to lash the country overnight.

An alert for Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry and Waterford comes into effect at 6pm on Wednesday and lasts until 2am on Thursday morning.

A forecaster cautioned: "South to southeast winds will reach 50 to 60 km/hr gusts 90 to 100 km/hr, mainly in coastal areas and on high ground."

Meanwhile, Dublin and Louth are under a separate yellow warning from 6pm on Wednesday until 3am on Thursday.

And eleven counties have been hit with a snow-ice warning as more snowfall is expected.

Met Eireann has issued the Status Yellow alert for all of Connacht, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Louth and Wicklow.

The caution will come into effect at 8pm on Wednesday, and it will remain valid until 10am on Thursday.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Icy in parts tonight with wintry outbreaks.

"Some snow accumulations possible before morning, mainly across the north and on higher ground elsewhere."

Hills and mountains will see a large amount of snowfall overnight, while lower areas are more likely to experience sleet showers.

A wet night is in store with rain expected nationwide and wintry showers hitting Connacht and Ulster.

Temperatures are set to plunge to as low as -1C, with frost and ice patches forming.

A spokesman said: "Rain will extend countrywide this evening and early tonight, turning wintry across Connacht and Ulster, falling as snow over high ground with sleet at lower levels."
