Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues Status Yellow wind warning as 100km/h gusts set to batter west

Five counties have been hit with a wind warning as gusts of up to 100km/h are set to batter the west coast of Ireland.

Met Eireann has issued the Status Yellow alert for Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare.

The caution will be valid between 5pm on Friday until noon on Saturday.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Southwest winds, veering westerly will reach mean speeds of 50-65km/h, with gusts up to 100km/h on Friday evening, Friday night and for a time on Saturday."

The west and the north will be the wettest areas on Friday night. Lows will range from 5C to 8C.

A forecaster said: "Windy tonight with a mixture of clear spells and showers, the showers frequent in the west and north.

"Minimum temperatures 5C to 8C in strong and gusty southwest winds and gales along western and northern coasts."

The weather chiefs are predicting a "very windy" Saturday, despite forecasting some bright spells.

There's a good deal of dry weather expected for Munster and Leinster, while other areas are to see long spells of rain.

The forecaster said: "Saturday will be a very windy day with bright spells and showers.

"Showers will merge to give longer spells of rain over Connacht and Ulster at times but there will be a good deal of dry weather across Leinster and Munster.

"Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C in strong to gale force west to southwest winds."
