Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues Status Yellow snow-ice warning as sub-zero temperatures expected

Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow snow-ice warning for five counties as bitterly cold conditions are set to continue.

The alert is in place for Wicklow, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, starting at 10pm on Tuesday night and will remain in place until 11am on Wednesday morning.

Weather experts are expecting "wintry showers" to lead to possible snow accumulations and icy conditions.

Sub-zero conditions are expected with temperatures set to hit lows of -1C overnight.

And the bitterly cold weather will continue on Wednesday, with further freezing temperatures overnight.

Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues official snow-ice warning for 10 counties 

Met Eireann's forecast for Tuesday reads: "Scattered showers and long clear spells overnight, in fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.

"Some further wintry falls are possible with the continuing risk of hail and thunder. However, the showers will tend to become confined to western and northern coastal counties later.

"Feeling raw with frost and ice, especially for sheltered areas.

"Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3C.

A spokesperson for the national forecaster added: "Frost and ice will clear on Wednesday morning to leave a bright and blustery day with sunny spells and scattered showers of rain or hail.

"Cloudier conditions with outbreaks of rain and sleet will move in across Ulster and east Leinster later in the afternoon, pushing down into remaining areas later in the evening.

"Another cold day with highs of only 6 to 9C, in fresh and gusty northwest wind.

"Showery rain and sleet will push southwestwards across the country overnight with the risk of some snowfall on mountains. A cold night with frost in some areas.

"Minimum temperatures of -1 to +4C with the fresh northerly breeze easing."
