Met Eieann has put the warning in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

The counties in the north west are at risk of flooding, with coastal areas and hills to be the worst affected areas.

The yellow alert will be valid between 2pm on Wednesday and midnight on Thursday.

"Amounts will be highest in coastal areas and on hills and mountains."

However, it will still be mild and humid overnight, with lowest temperatures ranging between 10C and 13C.

A forecaster said: "Tonight will remain cloudy, with further outbreaks of rain, persistent and widespread in Ulster, Connacht and in west Munster, but more patchy elsewhere.

"Misty, with hill and coastal fog. Mild and humid. Minimum temperatures 10 to 13 degrees."
