Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues Status Yellow rainfall warning as areas at risk of flooding

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning as the south-east of Ireland is in for a grim start to the bank holiday weekend.

The national forecaster issued the caution on Friday morning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork and Waterford.

The weather chiefs have warned of "pulses of heavy rain" which may lead to flooding as up to 30mm of rain is expected to fall in those counties.

The rainfall alert will come into effect at 8am on Friday, and it will be valid until 6am on Saturday.

A Met Eireann statement said: "Pulses of heavy rain at times today and overnight, with some spot flooding. Rainfall totals of 25 to 30 mm."

Meanwhile, conditions in other parts of the country won't be much better.

Met Eireann has also warned of possible thunderstorms and flooding after rain becomes widespread across Munster and Leinster.

Friday is to be a cold day, with some areas not experiencing highs of above 6C.

A forecaster said: "Rain will become widespread across Munster and Leinster this morning, heavy and possibly thundery in some southern areas, with some spot flooding.

"Early frost, mist and fog elsewhere, soon clearing, but becoming cloudy with some light rain developing in places.

"A cold day, with highs of just 6 to 9°C. Light variable breezes at first, becoming moderate northerly later."

Temperatures will plunge to as low as 0C overnight, with heavy rain continuing on many coastal counties.

The forecaster added: "Cloudy and wet over east Leinster and much of Munster, with further heavy rain at times in many coastal areas.

"Cold and mostly dry elsewhere, with some frost and mist in parts of Ulster and north Connacht. Lowest temperatures of zero to +4°C."
