Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues Status Red Marine Warning as 130km/h winds get set to batter Ireland

Met Eireann has issued a Status Red Marine Warning as Storm Brendan rapidly approaches.

The caution, which is aimed at the waters surrounding Ireland, was published at 11am this morning.

It warns that storm force winds will develop overnight, creating extremely dangerous conditions.

It reads: "Southerly gales or strong gales will develop overnight on Irish Coastal waters from Roches Point to Slyne Head to Malin Head.

"Strong gale force to storm force southerly winds will develop tomorrow morning on all Irish coastal waters and on the Irish sea, reaching violent storm force at times in the west."

It comes after the national forecaster issued including two Status Orange alerts for 11 counties, as the west and northwest braces for the onslaught.

A Status Orange wind warning for Donegal , Galway, Leitrim , Mayo and Sligo will come into effect at 7am on Monday, January 13, and will expire at midnight that night.

Another Status Orange wind alert was issued for Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

The warning is valid from 7am on Monday and will expire at 3pm that afternoon.

A third less severe Status Yellow warning covers the rest of the country.

And more cautions with Met Eireann also having a weather advisory in place.

It said: "We are entering a period of very unsettled weather. Further warnings for strong winds and rainfall are likely to be issued in the coming days."
