Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues snow and ice warning for the entire country as temperatures to hit below zero

While Ireland is still recovering from the chaos caused by Storm Jorge, Met Eireann has issued a yellow weather alert for the entire country.

The snow and ice warning will come into effect just after midnight on Monday and will remain in place until 8am on Monday morning.

A forecaster said: "Showers will continue to affect the western half of the country overnight, increasingly falling as sleet, or possibly snow in a few places.

"With minimum air temperatures near zero or below countrywide, some icy stretches are likely by morning."

More hail, rain and thunder is expected throughout today as temperatures are set to drop as low as -2C tonight.

A forecaster added: "Showers becoming scattered and confined to the western half of the country early tonight, with long clear spells developing in the east and southeast.

"A cold night with a widespread frost and some icy patches. Minimum temperatures of minus 2 to plus 1 degrees, coldest in the east. Winds will be moderate west to southwest, fresh on west coasts.

A Status Orange wind warning for 130km/h gusts was in place for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford throughout Saturday as the country was pummelled by storm force winds.

Storm Jorge caused chaos with flooding, heavy rain hampering parts of the country over the weekend.

Meanwhile around 1,000 homes, farms and businesses were left without power mainly on the west coast of Ireland.
