Irish weather forecast: Met Eireann issues rainfall warning for five counties as thunder and flooding set to continue

The not so sunny southeast is set to be battered by more heavy rain and thunderstorms after another weather warning was issued this afternoon.

Met Eireann has put a Status Yellow rainfall alert in place for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford.

The weather chiefs have also warned of a risk of flooding as the torrential rain continues.

The caution has been valid from 3pm today and will be in place until 3pm on Saturday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Further spells of heavy rain expected with a continued risk of thundery downpours and flooding."

Friday night will be cold and wet for most of the country, but western areas may stay mostly dry.

The heaviest rain will come in from the Irish Sea. Lows will range from 1C to 5C, with some areas expected to experience frost and fog patches.

A forecaster added: "Persistent and occasionally heavy rain will move in across the eastern half of the country overnight, with the risk of thundery downpours and spot flooding.

"Staying mostly dry across the western areas, with slight frost and fog patches locally. Lowest temperatures 1 to 5 degrees. Moderate northeast winds."

Persistent rain in the east is set to continue on Saturday. It will be drier and brighter in the west, with highs to range from 7C to 10C.

"Saturday will be a cloudy day with scattered outbreaks of rain, persistent at times across eastern counties.

"Drier and somewhat brighter across the west and southwest, however mist and fog patches may be slow to clear these parts.

"Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees, in light northerly breezes."
